Innogen researchers are working on a recycling project with Deep Branch Biotechnology that produces sustainable protein for animal feed from carbon dioxide. The company has recently secured European Innovation Council (EIC) Accelerator funding of €2.5 million to scale up production.

Innogen member Smita Srinivas and co-authors analyse COVID-19 testing in different countries. They highlight the need to take the industrial organisation of health systems within countries into account for testing strategies to be successful.

Innogen Associate, Dr Jack Scannell, has co-authored a policy paper for the Centre for Global Development that analyses the COVID-19 vaccine pipeline. This work aims to bring high-quality probabilistic models of the COVID-19 vaccine pipeline into the public domain, to help policy development as well as the management of technological and manufacturing risks.  

We speak with Chris Warkup, Visiting Professor, Innogen Institute, The Open University, about the actions that are required to develop the UK Government’s Research and Development (R&D) Roadmap and realise the UK’s ambition for science, research and innovation. Chris gives some answers to the Government’s consultation questions based on his career at the interface of academia, industry, policy makers, funders and investors.

Innogen’s co-Director has been appointed as a member of the UK Government’s new Regulatory Horizons Council, an independent expert committee set up to provide impartial, expert advice on the regulatory reform required to support the rapid and safe introduction of new technologies.

Dr Mark Lamont, Lecturer in International Development at The School of Social Sciences & Global Studies Development, The Open University, joined Innogen in June 2020. After completing his PhD in Social Anthropology at The University of Edinburgh, he has worked at The University of Victoria, Canada; Goldsmiths, The University of London; and The British Institute in Eastern Africa. He is currently working on research projects in Kenya that promote sustainable community development and resilience. In this Q&A he highlights the need to redesign the application of social science research to address global challenges and growing inequalities.

Innogen researchers are part of the Innovate-UK funded project REACT-FIRST, which brings together ten industry and academic partners to develop a scalable route to generate animal feed from captured carbon dioxide.

As part of TIBA (the NIHR Global Health Research Unit Tackling Infections to Benefit Africa at the University of Edinburgh), Geoff Banda and Vera Florida Mugittu have contributed to a new report on the social impact of Covid-19 mitigation measures on nine African countries.

Professor Smita Srinivas has been honoured by the Association for Evolutionary Economics (AFEE) for her outstanding work in the area of institutional economics.

The team working on the ERC-funded project Medical Translation in the History of Modern Genomics (TRANSGENE), which comprises various Innogen members, have published a freely available online dataset that enables users to identify overlooked individuals, institutions and connections in the history of genomic science.
